User interfaces when designed effectively can help to improve focus, facilitate easier learning and enrich the user experience through:

  • The organisation of the layout through information hierarchy of design elements and principles like sizing and placement of text and graphics.

  • Colour semiotics like green = correct, red = wrong, yellow to highlight an object for attention and a signal to interact.

  • The creation of easily recognisable UI assets and icons such as the navigation bar, buttons, menus, tabs, widgets etc.

  • Visual appeal of the graphics to enhance enjoyment like a VR game encourages.

The user interface of these virtual reality safety training programs were designed for several mining client projects that Sentient Computing employed me to work on during my time as a freelance UI Designer. After team discussions of client requirements and feedback for UI & UX design changes, I produced some highly-finished storyboards (virtual reality screen mockups) and shaped them as style guides for the programmers to follow and build from. For each client, I adapted their company brand colours into the UI graphics.

Improving user’s experiences and their learning in virtual reality safety training programs through a well-designed user interface

OZ MINERALS

Top:

Finished prototype of a Virtual reality tablet designed for Oz Mineral employees to interact and learn from. The design notes with arrows in red help the programmers know what colours to code for the hover, active and selection/click states.

  • From numbers 1 to 8, we see a high-fidility prototype made into a storyboards and a UI style guide for programmers to follow and build from.

  • A correct, incorrect, multiple choice example and exit screen example is shown. When an answer is clicked, it will also reveal more teaching notes below.

  • Each screen shows the steps of the interaction Oz Mineral employees will go through when answering the safety questions.

  • The UI graphics such as the menu bar, buttons and text pops out visibly from the high contrast of the black and yellow which is the Oz Mineral brand colour.

WOODSIDE

The UI graphics for Woodside’s VR training program is another project that I helped Sentient with. This UI design was a huge challenge to Sentient programmers, as Woodside continuously gave unsatisfied feedback over the “unattractive-looking” and “boring” design. To simply put it – the programmers possess the technical knowledge to build the program and its interactiveness, but not the design skills.

The solution was to call in assistance from a skilled UI Designer (myself) to help advise their programmers on how to build a more attractive and stylish user interface. After some briefing and a few rounds of feedback with the Sentient programmers, I produced this highly-finished screen mockup that Woodside finally approved.

Following the feedback given from the client, the Woodside brand colours of red and grey are used throughout the user interface screens. Furthermore, the graphics and text were made smaller and the graphic shapes has a see-through opacity of around 70% to give more of a modern, stylish appearance of futurism and visual interest of the background showing through.

Displayed on this page are three more options of the start screen that Woodside users will see when they first enter the VR program.

As seen here, there are three different types of the “Intelligent Assets” menu bar for Woodside to  decide over.

UI icons were sourced/created and provided to the Sentient programmers to easily upload onto this training program.

After the revision of the UI, the final VR product gives Woodside a look and feel of professionalism and “corporate elegance,” hence, a good reputation is portrayed and  kept once more to their internal stakeholders and employees.
